Abstrakt

[Professor dr hab. Jerzy Jarowiecki's Forty Five Years of the Academic Work]

The article provided data concerning the academic output of Jerzy Jarowiecki, professor and a long-time director of the Institute of Library Management and Scientific Information at the Pedagogical University named after the National Education Commission in Cracow, the Chair of the Journalism Commission of the Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences, previous Director of the Main Methodological Centre for Teacher Training. The article's objective was to present professor's life and to commemorate the forty-five-year period of his academic work.Professor was born on May 27, 1930 in Borysław. He lived through the German occupation period in Lvov. In 1945 he settled in Bytom and then moved to Wałbrzych. In 1953 he began the Polish philological studies at the Pedagogical University in Cracow. During his final year at the university he took up the position of the junior assistant at the Chair of the History of Polish Literature, where he remained after he had graduated and acquired the title of Master of Arts. Subsequently, he received the title of doctor and habilitated doctor, became professor extraordinary, and finally professor ordinary. In 1978 he was appointed the head of the Department of Library Management and Scientific Information. In the course of time the Department was transformed into a Chair and then into the Institute of Library Management and Scientific Information, which was directed by professor Jarowiecki until 2000, and which was successfully developed by him. In the same year he retired still continuing his work in the Institute. The fundamental subject matters of his literary and press research were the historical novel by Władysław Stanisław Reymont, and the literature and the press of the war and German occupation period. The total of his 350 works was published until the end of 1999. Professor conferred 23 doctor's degrees, was a reviewer of 15 doctoral and 20 habilitated dissertations, was frequently a member of various academic commissions and reviewed the case of conferring the title of professor. Professor Jarowiecki has great achievements in publishing. He published the novel "Lubonie" by J.I. Kraszewski, he continued with other works by the same author, and he published Maria Konopnicka's "Historic and Literary Letters". Between 1987 and 1990 he performed the function of Prorector of the Pedagogical University. He organised the Institute of Polish Philology at the Szczecin University, and he was the Director of the Main Methodological Centre for Teacher Training. For his academic and didactic work, as well as social involvement, professor Jarowiecki was awarded numerous orders and medals. In 2000 he was granted the Officer Cross of Poland's Revival Order.
